Help needed identifying wires for light fixture install.

I've done some research and found out that there is suppose to be a white wire and and black wire coming out of the electrical box in the ceiling but I have both a white a black and a red wire. I also found out that there is supposed to be a black, white and ground wire coming out of the light fixture but I have two black wires and one ground wire. What wires do I attach to each other?
FYI: I know where the ground wire goes.

Welcome to the forums.

In the ceiling box you have the white for neutral, one switched wire.... probably red, and an always live wire.... probably black. You can cap off the black wire.

The ribbed or grooved side of the cable is white and the smooth side is black. In your case with the printing.... if there aren't ridges in either wire then the printed side is neutral or white.

Thanks....So printed black wire from the light fixture attaches to the white wire in the ceiling and the other black wire on the light fixture attaches to the red wire in the ceiling and I just cap off the black wire in the ceiling?

Give that a try. If the light doesn't operate with the switch then you'll need to swap the red and black wires.

Hi PJ,

I just wanted to say thank you. You were correct....one of the black wires on the light had small grooves on it so I attached that one to the white wire in the ceiling and the other black wire on the fixture to the red wire in he ceiling. I capped off the black wire coming from the ceiling and attached the ground to the mounting bracket and it's working. Thanks so much.
