Do I have room for recessed lighting?

I'm wanting to install 3 6" recessed LED's on one side of my split level living room.

I removed an old track light, and went to install the first can, and the old box seems to be nearly flush mounting into the roof? Is that possible? How do I see if I'll have room? How do I measure for it?

Here's a couple pictures.

Just for full disclosure, I installed a couple 6" cans outside the front door, that seems to be the same celing/roof space. I did have to cut down the cans to half height...

Why not just buy low heigth cans?
There going to need to be air tight and IC rated.

You can drill a 1/8" hole and stick a cut coathanger or wire up to measure the amount of room.

If you had to cut the can in half it does not sound like you have anywhere close to the room.

If you find you do not have enough room, look into LED disk lights that fit in a 4" box. They look very similar to a recessed can. Example: Commercial Electric 6 in. Soft White Recessed LED Can Disk Light-CE-JB6-650L-27K-E26 - The Home Depot
