Recessed lighting Romex connectors

I am installing 6" recessed can lights in my unfinished basement. They are Commercial Electric brand from Home Depot. Do I have to use the Romex connector "clamps" on each light to pass code? As of right now, I have just been popping out the tabs on the end of the junction boxes and running the wires through these, not the round knockouts. There is a little metal clip that holds the wire in place under the tab that I knock out. However, I am getting this inspected and want to know if I should be using the round knockouts and Romex connectors to pass the inspection.

Thanks for the help!

Those little plastic knockout areas are approved for wiring. You would need to use a connector in a 1/2" knockout hole if you were wiring with a metal clad cable. (like BX or MC)
