house ceiling wiring

I am trying to install a ceiling fan, and upon taking down the old fixture I found two sets of wiring going to the light. One set is hot the other not. The one that is hot remains out even when the light switch is off. When I installed the ceiling the fan i was not able to it on or off via the light switch. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forums. Certainly you took pictures of the wiring before you took it apart. Oh, OK. The cable that is not hot is a switch loop. If you look at your switch, you will see a white and black attached to the switch screws. In the ceiling box, the white wire from the switch loop connects to the black hot wire. The black wire from the switch attaches to your fan's black wire. The white from your fan will attach to the white in the "hot" cable.
