Will this box hold a ceiling fan?

Sorry for such a basic question but I've only ever replaced fans with other fans and never just a dome light and since it's over a bed i'm being extra cautious. Anyways it's a metal box and all thats it is attached to is a central rod.

Short and sweet, no. Go to the big box store and look at the fan-rated boxes and the differences will be immediately obvious.

David, this forum does NOT advise doing ANYTHING that is contrary to codes.

lsstal01, here is a picture of a fan-rated box. Note the internal "towers" for the 10-24 fan mounting bolts. Standard boxes with bent ears are NOT an approved method.

This is one type of box that can be used after removing the box that is there.

I agree with Rays post you can get those in the space required if you don't have any flooring above you. If you do be prepared to tear out some of the ceiling as it is next to impossible to put in if you don't have enough clearance. Some people have used the box you have for ceiling fans but that is a big mistake as the ears over time can break off due to vibration. A fan rated box is made to withstand the vibration that a fan can make.
