Ceiling fan brace is to big to fit my joists?

I just to down my light fixture box to install a ceiling fan box with a brace. When I inserted the brace to my amazement I found that the brace is to long. I am assuming when they build the house the joists was not properly spaced apart. Rats! I didn't think I had to measure the distance between the joists before I begun. Do the fan braces come any smaller? I can't seem to find any other than standard size. If finding one shorter option is out what can I do? Is there side mount fan boxes that I can use? or is there a way to make the brace fit? I got my living room in a mess. i thought this would be sort of a easy project. Lol. Thanks in advance.

What is the measurement between ceiling joists? Is there a second story or is it attic space?

Are you certain that your brace is not adjustable for length? Can you post a picture of yours or a link to it online?

roughly about 9 inches between the joists. There is another story above no attic.

I have researched a little and I am not the only one with the same problem.
they cut the bracket to size to make it fit. I am looking at that option now.

Some of those expanding fan brackets can be cut. You'd have to make sure the end fitting came off and that the bar could be shortened.

Sounds like you have TJI's on close centers. Take the old box down and stick a camera into the hole to see if you need to scab on a piece to the framing.
