Advice on 3 way fan wiring...... So confused.

Hi,

I attempted to have light and fan control on my existing 3 way wired fan circuit and add the lights to know avail.

so does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 3 way fan? I plan on just rewiring the entire circuit.

I want to control the fan speed and light on and off separately of each other from two different switches....
is this possible? if so how would it be wired/

thanks

Jenny

There may be a confusion of terms here. A 3 way is two switches controlling the same thing. Like one switch at each door to a room controlling the entire fan.

Do you have a 3 wire cable from your switch box to the fan box ? That would be different.

If this is a new installation you need cable called 14-3 NM-b with ground. That cable contains a red for the lights, a black for the fan, a white for the common neutral and a bare ground wire.

Advice on 3 way fan wiring...... So confused.

trying to convert a fan with no light with a light kit has shown to be harder then I thought.
the fan is operated by two switches. one with a 3 way switch and the other is with a single pole fan speed switch.

on the fan speed switch there are 2 red Wires hooked up two black Wires of the fan speed switch. and one ground. there is also a black wire that has a red cap on it.

the other 3 pole switch has
red
black
white
bare copper.

all of those switches are connected to the switch.

in the ceiling I have
red
black
white
ground

red is to the fan black
black is also capped like the same black at the fan speed switch.
white is connected to the white

the fan has a capped blue

I tried connecting the red, capped black and blue all together and heard a humming noise from the fan selector, then the fuse blew.

what I want to do is be able to operate the fan and light separately from either switch. I don't care about dimming or anything.

if I cant do that I'd like to operate the fan and light separately from the fan selector switch.

I know I need to buy a new light switch for fan/light.

also the selector only works if the 3 way switch is on. if the 3 way switch is off I cant operate the speed selector switch.

Lastly, I tried connecting black wife in ceiling to the blue wire and the light works but no way to turn off the light except with the pull string

Sorry for typos
Only have two switches to fan

sorry for so long, I'm a new homeowner trying to save some money.

thanks all!!
