Ceiling Box Under Duct
I need to install a ceiling box for a chandelier, and there is a round duct directly above the required box location. Is it okay if I just squish the round duct into an oval to make room for the box? Can the duct rest directly on the back of the metal box? I plan to add a wood cross member so I can mount a metal box to that.

You want to squish and flatten the duct and then add a wood cross member too.
You are going to be tight there. Are you close enough to a floor joist to use a box that attaches directly to the stud ?

Clarification: The box needs to go in the middle of a 14" wide joist bay opening with a duct in the middle of it. I plan to attach a 14" piece of 2 x 4 mounted on its side between the 2 joists so that I can then mount the box on the side of that 2 x 4. So the sideways 2 x 4 only adds 1.5" in height, and to that I will add the box mounted on the 1.5" side, and the total height I am adding to the space is either 1.5" or the height of the box, whichever is taller.

Depending on the weight of the chandelier, why not use a pancake box and the 2x4 you mention? It is only 1/2" tall, or so. It will fit under the 2x4 and be flush with the sheetrock ceiling. Westinghouse 6 cu. in. New Construction or Remodel Ceiling Fan Saf-T-Pan-0103600 - The Home Depot

Note if you use a pancake box power should go the the switch first because of the very limited box fill of a pancake box. Of course given 2011 code requiring a neutral in the switch box even if not needed that is the best way to go anyway.
