Ceiling Fan - Question on Existing Outlet Box

Hi everyone,

Hoping that someone can confirm whether or not the existing outlet box I have installed in my home is rated for a ceiling fan or not. House was gut-renovated in 2014 and in the dining room there is a covered outlet box. I do not have an attic to access and view from above. Pictures below are of the outlet box that is under the cover. Fan is approximately 20 lbs. Thank you!

That new it should be embossed Fan Rated. Look in the bottom. It looks fan rated. Are the fixture screws 10-24?

Looking at the pictures now I do see some of the embossing that I didn't initially notice. Its painted over a bit, but I'll take a better look this evening and check to see what it says.

If nothing else, these plastic boxes are easy to remove and replace with something like below:

From what I remember plastic ceiling fan boxes are no longer considered to be safe for ceiling fans. So even if it says fan rated I suggest replacing the box with a metal one. I though am not an electrician but do remember seeing this somewhere.

There are listed plastic fan rated boxes available. If the existing box is fan rated there is no compelling reason to change it.

Poked around more closely last night and its just a Carlon ceiling outlet box that fastens on the side (with the the "wings") of a joist. So looks like its going to have to come out and be replaced with a Westinghouse brace I ordered.
