Shallow fan box for proper installation of outdoor fan

I have a ceiling fan in the patio installed directly to a wood joist. The electrical is fed through the side of the canopy.
There is no electrical box. Also, inside the fan canopy and the wood beam, there is no metal in between. I am assuming this is against code?

I don't have many options to change location. Also, I don't want a visible electrical box.
I came across super shallow pan boxes:
4" Round 1/4" Deep, Super Shallow Pan Box with (5) 1/2" Conduit Knockouts
It is still 1/4" deep. Meant for 1/4" drywall.

Is there a "flatter product"? Any chance the above box would be covered by the fan canopy (1/4" lip)?

You will either need to use a fan rated pancake box or be able to screw the fan mounting plate to the wood beam.

Your problem here is that the fan's canopy won't fit well against that type of box. You'll also need to keep in mind that if your patio isn't covered you'll need to keep the rain from running into the fan canopy which would run down into the motor.

You may to incorporate something like a surface box. Wiremold surface boxes come in different diameters.

On edit: just re-reading your post.... you could fashion your own back box with some type of metal. Basically a round, flat piece of metal that would become the back of the box.

That might be my only solution. I was hoping to keep the fan canopy flush against the ceiling beam.

I've never seen that before. Leave it to Arlington.
