Installing a pendant light in a space where there is a recessed can light?

I have a little design dilemna. I have a recessed can light, but would like to install either a pendant light or some other type of non-recessed light fixture. Is this possible to do with what I have? Or do I have to remove the recessed light fixture from the attic, patch the ceiling, and start over?

There are some adapter kits available for certain recessed fixtures.

If you drop the trim there should be a brand name inside. We need to know that and the diameter. Otherwise drop the trim and post a picture for us.

Thanks PJmax. I purchased the recessed light fixture from Home Depot. It is the 4" Halo LED brand that Home Depot sells. What I would like to do is add the below pendant light (middle picture) or flush mount light (bottom picture). The adapter kit you suggested looks good. I wonder if it would work for both the pendant light and flush mount light that I was thinking of adding. This is for a small bathroom.

The pendant's base may not cover the 4" opening so you would use the adapter plate.

It looks like the surface light may cover the opening with no additional plate needed.

You will need to make sure the pendant is at least 3' horizontally from the tub or shower.

Oh bad news. I just measured and the lights I want to convert from can light to either pendant or sort ace mount.... those lights would be almost exactly 3 feet away from the shower. Does this have any implications on whether I can convert these can lights to a pendant or surface-mounted light?

A pendant would be too close but a surface mounted ceiling fixture would be ok.

Uh oh... What about these lights (below)? Do you think they would be ok for use somewhat close to the shower (approx 2.5 - 3 feet away from the shower)? I hope they are more damp-proof than the pendant light. What do you think?
  • The 1st light is a generic surface-mounted light fixture, but it looks like the bulbs either screw in or press in.
  • The 2nd light is a track mounted light fixture.
