Mounting ceiling fan, joists too close

Hi I'm mounting a ceiling fan where an old one was. The old one had a bracket screwed into the joists from the outside of the hole, however, the new fan doesn't fit onto that. I removed it and bought an expandable brace with the box attached but the joists are too close together to get the brace between them. What would my options be to mount this fan?

If you have a stud in sight of your mounting location.... you could use one of the following three boxes. All available from electrical supply or home improvement stores. They will all install from the ceiling below. No attic access required.

The only issue is that these three boxes require non metallic cable. If you have metal clad cable... a metal box must be used.

You can also cut down the spreader bars on the bracket you have.
