Calculating load of track lighting

I am trying to figure out a way to dim my garage track lighting. I have 26 fixtures with 50 W each. I believe this is 1300 W and obviously a dimmer switch cannot handle this.

My question is: if I replace the 50W bulbs with 4.5 W LED bulbs then the load drops down to 117 W? Can I then use an ordinary dimmer switch with it?

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the forums.

I moved your post to its own thread.

They do make 1500 watt dimmers for incandescent lamps.

I would doubt a regular dimmer would work on 117 watts of LED load but you won't know until you try it. It all depends on the type of power supply the LED bulbs use.

As I mentioned in the original thread you posted in.... I use only the Lutron Maestro CL dimmers now.

Thanks PJmax and Esand1.

right now all of the bulbs are incandescent. I was considering replacing them with LED to lower energy cost and also because the load is so high that I thought I couldn't put them on a dimmer.

is it just that simple that I can hook up (50W x 26) 1300 W to the 1500 W dimmer and that will work or is that too close to the limit?

Can I mix some LED and some incandescent to lower the load?
Does it help that the LED are packaged as dimmable?

Thanks again.

The dimmer will operate warm but ok. I would think that adding LED's into the track instead of all incandescents would be fine but the two most likely won't dim at the same rate. The LED's will probably stay brighter longer while the incandescents dim.
