Ceiling fan: lights stopped working

We just turned on the lights to our ceiling fan, they flickered and went out. We tried other bulbs and none work, but the fan still works. The unit is less than 5 years old, but I'm guessing it's done for. It did have a bad smell when it happened too. Thoughts? Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forums.

Most ceiling fans have replaceable remote control receivers. Many times when a bulb burns out it takes the dimmer out with it.

A very bad smell combining burnt and a strange odor means a semiconductor device burned out. In your case, I would suspect the dimmer TRIAC (power controller).

This is one place where combining functions 8is NOT good.

Also, cheap incandescent bulbs without multiple filament supports can draw heavy current when the burned out filament falls, This can take out the dimmer.
