Ceiling box with nipple - will it supprt a fan?

I want to install a ceiling fan, but have spray insulation in the attic so I canít get up there. The was built @ 50's but has been reno'd by other owners.

This box feels solid as a rock, but it says ď12lbs maxĒ on it (the fan instructions say the box should be rated for 50lbs). I poked a nail through every hole in the box to see if there was wood but they all felt hollow. I took out one of those screws and it was just a shorty - didnít seem to be doing much. The joist seems to be fairly close on one side, but maybe a foot or so away on the other.

Iím wondering if that nipple in the middle is going to some sort of brace. Does anyone know?
Is there any way I can install the fan without replacing this box?

The problem is the ears. They are not rated for a fan.

Thanks Ray. Ok so I would have to replace the box - so I'm back to the question about the nipple - have you ever seen this? I'm now wondering how difficult it will be to replace the box or whether I should scrap the whole idea and just put a light there.

Remove the box and hanger bar for the box and replace with a fan box kit.
