Question Can I use this capacitor for my ceiling fan?

Original:
5UF/300v
5UF/250v
5UF/250v
Possible replacement:
4UF/300v
4UF/250v
2.5UF/250v

I won't to say no, but want to be certain. I've never had a cap go bad on a fan before. And I'm sure it's the cap because some black goo has seeped out the top and it has a small bump near the goo.

I didn't know ceiling fans had caps... Yes if it has black goo seeping out it is bad. As for the rating, from what I have read the voltage can be higher but the micro farads must be the same

Search the net for ceiling fan parts and how tos. I have bought capacitors off ebay and they worked. You need to know the number of wires, I suspect yours is 5. On the old capacitor it probably says 5uf 5uf 5uf, which you should be able to find, I think I bought one once. Label which wire goes where. Cut the wires off the old capacitor at the base to give you as much wire as possible. strip the old and new wires. wire it together. test the fan. If you put the capacitor in back ward it much switch from low to high in the wrong sequence.

Probably a Hunter fan. You are looking for a CBB61 capacitor. Rated at 250v and fine for your application. Available from many places. Basically a low quality capacitor. Buy two so you have a spare.

Here's one from amazon... TECH-Ceiling-Fan-Capacitor-Wired
