Flourescent light hums

Flourescent light hums

I have a flourescent light in a shed which the electrician wired directly into the side of the light which hangs down; it is about 36 " long; when I turn it on it hums continuously; what the the likely cause of the humming. thanks.

Most likely its the ballast. Could be a cheap one in which case its not reaching operating temp or proper frequency. Or it might be interference from another electronic item.

Some ballasts are noisier than others. This is especially true for fixtures that are normally installed in an industrial location rather than commercial or residential. I have high output fixtures in my garage and they DO have a fairly loud hum. I have tried to teach them the words but it is an exercise in futility.
