Outside lights turn on automatically when dark?

I have a few external house lights that I want to switch to automatically turn on at night. What is the easiest way to get this done? Btw this is my 1st house so I have no experience messing with electrical stuff, thx.

What type of lights do you have? There are photo sensors you can add to turn the lights on dusk to dawn. There are simple screw in lamp bases that have the sensor built in and there are sensors you wire into the light circuit.

Not sure the brand, I'll check on that later. Which one of these is the better solution, meaning longer lasting and more reliable?

Can the lights still be manually turned on and off with a switch?

reference to PD's post.

Both are reasonably reliable. Yes they can and do wear out at times. If you're not familiar with electrical work then don't get the wired in ones. Or get an electrician to wire it for you. Yes the light can still be turned off via the switch (no electricity no operation).

It also depends if they are on a single switch or on no switch at all.
Each light may need its own control as one central device may be impossible to wire.

Would it cost a lot of $$ to get some kind of auto light switch that can be programmed and controlled by a mobile device?

The screw-in base would be easiest. Changing the light fixture to one with built in features, or changing the switch is 2nd.

I tried both the fixtures and the programmable switches and had problems with both.
The most reliable to me is a photocell in a separate box that feeds any lights you want, but that might require running a new cable.

Anything is possible if you're willing to spend the money. Installing a wifi controller for your lights can be done but it will be considerably more expensive than the other options mentioned. Not to say it's crazy expensive but a simple photo cell lamp base is really cheap and easy to install.
