Ceiling light fail

hello when the house was built there was supposed to be a celing fan but i requested for there to not be one so they covered the wires with a meatal plate. though today i decided to put a light there. when i removed the cover there were 1 black wire 1 red wire 1 white wire and 1 copper ground i turned off the main breaker and connected the house black to light black house white to light white and house ground to fan ground. this did not work so i connected the house red to light which also didnt work so then i put both the house black and red to the fan black which didnt work . i dont know what to do at this point as i made sure all the switches in the walls had wires coming out though i am not sure as to where they go what do you guys think i should do

So you know power comes in at the switch. So you need to open the switch box and find the 3-conductor cable from the ceiling and see if it is connected and if so how?

Moving Vanity Light Box

I'd like to raise this thread again, as I have reverse situation. I'd like to remove my vanity light and add a new LED mirror, requiring me to abandon the existing wall box and extend down to a new box. I'd rather not pull and replace all the wiring from the switch (I could as it comes from above), so I'd like to add a 2 foot extension from the existing box, but was told by a friend that this is not allowed. Alternatively, I could could cut the wire in the attic, add a metal junction box up there, and then just run the new wire down to the location, then remove the old box. Appreciate comments on what is allowed - or where I could read up on whats allowed in Connecticut. Thanks,Read More

Q on replacing dining room light

Hi folks - I'm sure this is an easy question for you experts. I'm replacing an old hanging light over the dining room table. It's only a 2-wire light, no ground wire. The new light I'm installing is a typical 5-bulb Hampton Bay light from Home Depot. It has 2 wires (one with smooth cover and one with "ribbed" cover), and then 1 bare ground wire. If you look at my diagram, this is how the old light was installed. Here's my explanation of my awesome MS Paint drawing :-) 1. There are three "feeds" that come into the box. The black wire from feed #1, the black wire from feed #2, and the white wire from feed #3 are tied together. 2. The white wire from feed #1, the white wire from feed #2, and one of the wires from the old light are tied together. 3. The black wire from feed #3 is tied to the old light's other wire. 4. Then the 3 ground (bare) wires from each of the three feeds are attached together with a copper clip, and then one of them goes to the metal clip on the box, the second one is "clipped short", and the third one is just hanging loose. My questions are: 1. Do I install the 2 wires coming from the new light in the same manner as the old lamp? Are the two wires the same, or is the "ribbed" one different from the smooth? (Quick update - I spoke to the light's company and he said the "grooved" or "ribbed" wire goes to the ceiling's white wire, and the light's smooth wire goes to the ceiling's black wire.) 2. Do I hook up the light's ground wire to the box's ground wire that I labeled "hanging"? Or should I leave those three ground wires alone, and just hook up the light's ground wire to the green screw of the mounting strap?) Any other tips would be great! Thanks!
