Power running to fixture but no light

Recently bought a house and I had replaced my exterior light fixture as the old one was not working, unfortunately neither is the new one. I have checked the receptacle box and although it is older wire (red &black insulated) they were fine, checked the box and it was ground. Put a tester on the hot wire and turned the switch on, it registered fine, so i am thinking maybe the new fixture is defective so i grabbed a lamp to test and although there was power running to the lamp, still no light. Not sure of my next step.

Welcome to the forums.

A properly wired light should connect from black to white or from red to white.
You didn't mention a white wire which would be the neutral.

Maybe by chance the red is actually an off color white..... then there should be 120v measured from black to it.
