Connecting single pole switch to existing 3w dimmer wiring

Hi, all. I have an existing 3-way knob dimmer switch connected to recessed lights in my den. The switch is wired exactly as shown in this diagram:

I added a single pole switch to the box to control a ceiling fan in the same room. To power the fan, I:
  • Added a pigtail to the Common/Hot Source connection in the diagram and ran the pigtail to the single-pole switch,
  • Connected all neutrals with a wire nut, and
  • Connected all grounds with a wire nut
The dimmer works great just like before adding the switch. The problem is that the single pole doesn't get power unless the dimmer is on. In other words, I can't run the ceiling fan unless the recessed lights are on. How can I wire the single pole switch so that it operates independently of the dimmer?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Welcome to the forums.

You made an incorrect assumption. That black wire that connects to the common of the dimmer is the load TO the light..... it's not the hot feed. You don't have a hot feed there.

That diagram is just one wiring possibility... there are others.

Pete,

Thanks for the reply! That makes sense! I'll try connecting the pigtail in the other two splices. Thanks for clearing that up for me! This is my first go with an older dimmer like this one.

If you need further help with the wiring.... post a picture or two of the actual wiring.
