Need help changing light fixture

I'm changing out a light fixture. The new fixture came with an 'easy connect mounting bracket' that is circular and larger than the existing electrical box which is rectangular. I can connect everything, but the back of the inserts on the mounting bracket don't allow the bracket to sit flush with the wall. What do I need to do here?

Some pictures would help us understand the problem you are having. You mentioned "wall". Are you installing a wall sconce?

How does your fixture mount? Does it have two screws spaced several inches apart or is there one big threaded tube in the center?

How to add images. How To Insert Images

If you mean a switch box that uses 6-32 screws replace it with the correct box, an octagon or round box that uses 8-32 fixture screws.

Yes, it is a wall sconce. The fixture mounts with two screws a couple inches apart.
