How to transpose coordinate from floor to ceiling

Hi,

Need to install some ceiling lights but the ceiling is arched, so i decided to base my measurements on the floor dimensions rather than ceiling.... but my question is once i have the locations marked on the floor how do i get those coordinates up to the ceiling. Don't want to buy any expensive tools... there must be an easy inexpensive way to do this..... Any ideas??? Thanks in advance!

You could use a plumb bob. Just hold at the ceiling and move till at the correct spot on the floor.

The plumb bob is ancient and works very well. All you need is a weight like a nut and a piece of string. It will require you to be up at the ceiling holding the string and carefully moving it until you get into the right position. If you feel like getting something a little blingy laser levels have become quite inexpensive. You just set it on the floor and it projects a dot directly above.
