How to check if electrical box is good to mount ceiling fan ?

i bought a house and would like to replace ceiling light with ceiling fan in one of the rooms. I would I know if he electrical box is good to put ceiling fan on ? Is there any way to visually tell if fan can be mounted ?

Welcome to the forums.

We know by looking at them. They usually use a larger size mounting screws.
If you post a picture we can comment on it..... How-to-insert-pictures

I can see it's a standard 4" round electrical box for romex and missing the two romex clamps.
It is not a fan rated box.
I can't tell what type box it is. It looks like a nail-on to the side of a joist. Fairly easy to change for a different box.

Very important...... since you'll need to change that box out. Label the four cables like A, B, C and D and take another picture. This way you'll get the connections right.

Hi,

I agree with Pete, this is not a fan rated box. You would need to replace the box with a ceiling fan electrical box. Double check the weight of the fan. If it is less than 35lbs, I recommend using something like the following link from Lowes. It's less than $7, and will do the trick.

@Mabrus.... although the box you linked to would work for a fan.... it would require the sheetrock to be cut in order to hammer the nails in.

This type of box can be installed without cutting the sheetrock.
