2 sets of wires in ceiling box

2 sets of wires in ceiling box

Removed an old light to install a ceiling fan. Box has 2 sets of wires in it. 1 has black white and bare. 2 nd has red black tan and green. The 2 blacks are capped together the green and bare are capped together. The white and tan were twisted together and capped with a light wire and the red was capped on the light. Do I use the red as the hot on ceiling fan and the white&tan withe white on fan and add green to the 2 greens that are capped together now? House built in 1975 Iím not sure why I have t sets of wires in box.

Welcome to the forums.

That's old white...... not tan.

That circuit sounds like the power was brought to that location via the two wire cable.
Power is sent down to the switch on the black and returns on the red of the three wire cable.

Your fan connects to the red and the spliced whites.
You must also confirm that you have a fan rated box there.
