Need help replacing OLD light switch (which wires go where?)

I am trying to replace an old light switch with unmarked wires. Which wires go where? Thanks!

The wire on the screw and the one in the push-in next to it need to get spliced together. Then add a short piece of the same wire.... looks like #14..... as a tail to go to one of the screws on the switch. The single wire goes to the other screw on the switch.

Thanks for the feedback. If that’s the case, do I leave the green ground screw empty on the new switch?

on a side note- does it matter which screw these two ends attach to on the new switch, top or bottom?

thanks!

You can use either screw terminal. Leave the ground screw empty.

If there is no ground in the box then leave the screw empty. If there is a ground present then a pigtail should be added to connect the switch.

I’m not certain if the third side wire is a ground or not. I would assume it is but can’t tell as everything is hidden in the box. I can do some more digging next week when I’m there. Unfortunately I don’t have a photo now.

The ground would be bare or green insulated.
