Question True diameter of ceiling fan downrod

I am moving a ceiling fan from one room to another.

I need a new longer downrod as the new ceiling is much higher.

Researching a little bit online, I found that downrods seem to come in two sizes: inch and inch.

I took the old downrod to Home Depot (and several others) to make sure I got the right size.

The only downrods available were labeled inch and they are definitely wider than the old downrod. My assumption would be that the old downrod I want to replace is inch but when I measure it, it is definitely bigger than inch. In fact, the interior diameter is just under of an inch,

So, before I order anything online, I am wondering if someone knows whether what I need is a inch downrod (just mis-named) or if what I have is a non-typical size.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

The downrod size is 1/2" on most of the fans I've worked on or installed. You can take your downrod to the electrical department and check it against 1/2" threaded conduit. Do you have any romex connectors there ? That is 1/2" conduit sized and that locknut should fit your downrod.

PJmax,

On the fans you have installed with a ” downrod, was the downrod actually ” in diameter or larger (by almost a quarter of an inch)?

1/2" rigid conduit measures .84" OD which is just over 3/4".
3/4" rigid conduit measure 1.05" OD which is just over 1".

Down rods I imagine like pipes are measured by INSIDE diameter not outside.

Joed,

As I say, even the inside diameter of the old downrod is almost a quarter of an inch wider than 1/2". So still confusing.

I think PJmax has answered my question:

1/2" rigid conduit measures .84" OD which is just over 3/4".

That seems consistent with the size of my old downrod so I assume I need a 1/2" downrod.
