3 way switch with separate fan and light controls

I need to new wire a 3 way switch to a ceiling fan/lite with separate fan/lite controls. The guy at Home Depot told me to wire it this way, 3 wire from switch to switch and 2 separate 2 wire from switch to ceiling fan/lite, is this correct?

Yes, that would work, but one 3 wire cable would also work going from the switch box to the fan/light box. With two 2 wire cables the neutral would be redundant. The fan (or light, not both) will only be controlled from the two gang box.

One other thing to mention is that current code requires a neutral in all boxes (with some exceptions). Your picture will not have that.

What I want to do is turn on and off the fan lite from both sides of my living room, the fan I will only turn on and off from one side of the living room. Can I still do this if I run one 3 wire up to the fan/lite?

You would need four 3-way switches, two at each side of the room, and two 3 wire cables, to control light and fan individually from both sides.

In any case or variation you can run one 3 wire cable instead of two 2 wire cables up to the fan/light unit.

Yes. The 3 wire cable will work fine. As mentioned, you will only need 3 ways to control the light. If you want to control the fan from two locations you will need another set of three ways. Either way you only need a 3 wire to the fan box.

Yes. That is the preferred way.
You don't need four three ways if only want to control the fan from one location.
You do need four wire cable to the far three way since a neutral is required.
