Mounting J Box and Fan onto C beam with hole

I have a condo converted from an old factory that currently has a ceiling fan mounted via a hole drilled through a C beam, and with no J box, see attached photos.

My question is, how should I correctly install the fan? Is there a safe way to use the existing hole drilled into the C beam, or should I use a beam clamp? Also should there be a rubber gasket between the J box and beam to reduce vibration?

More info:
  • I have this ceiling fan (Hampton Bay 60 inch)
  • There is power and an outlet near by on the ceiling but no J box for the current fan as mounted
  • C beam dimensions:
    • 2 inch lip (2 inch flange length, one way since its not an I beam
    • About 1/8 inch flange thick increasing to 3/16th inch flange thickness
  • There is a hole about 1/4 inch wide drilled into the center of the C beam (how the current fan is mounted)
Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums.

Neither using the existing hole or beam clamp will yield a correct or safe installation.

I would highly recommend attaching the proper electrical box to the bottom of the C beam with two bolts, nuts and lock washers.

I'd suggest lock nuts rather than lock washers but that is just personal choice.

Thanks PJmax and ray2047

For the 2 bolts, nuts, and lock washers (or 2 bolts and lock nuts) would I drill 2 new holes through the C beam?

It's a C channel rather than a U channel (angled) so it seems like I'd need to correct that angle

Drill the holes straight thru the metal. Use a good grade of bolt and stop nut.
The nut will sit on an angle.
