Question Closet Light

Hello all,

At this point I am just planning and assessing, and nothing has been started yet.
Currently, there is a closet in our hallway that we would like to install a single recessed light (have some left over from previous project). Currently, the hallway has a single light and its own switch. I guess my question is, if I were to add this light in the closet, where is the closest power source I can tap into while having the closet light controlled by its own switch? The hallway light and the proposed closet light are at most 2-3’ feet away, so is it possible to tap into the power source there but still have its own independent light switch?

You can tap in the hall light. However depending on how the hall light is wired you may need to tap the switch or the light fixture.
If you open the switch and find only a black and white both connected to the switch then you have to go to the fixture for power. If the switch has two black connected and two whites in wire nut in the back of box then you can tap power from it.
