Incandescent/Halogen dimmer switch with LEDs?

I have an unopened dimmer switch that is rated at 600w. It says on the package its for incandescent and halogen bulbs but not LED.

I've seen ones specified including use with LED in addition to the other two types of bulbs and those switches seem to be rated the same.

My question is: Can I use this dimmer with LEDs even though the packaging doesn't say LEDs on it? The wattage rating and wiring looks to be identical.

Can you try it...... yes but not recommended.
Will it work..... there's a 50-50 chance.

LED dimmers work differently than an incandescent dimmer since the LED bulbs have actual power supplies in them. Most LED only dimmers are rated for 150 watts. An LED can appear as a dead short to a non LED type dimmer.

I asked because I see other dimmers for sale on Home Depotís site that claim to work with all the above, so I was wondering if mine is just older that it didnít specifically say LED on the packaging.

They do make newer dimmers that are compatible will all three types of lamps.
These use a soft start technology to eliminate the start up short.

Proceed at your own risk since there are no manufacturing standards for LED bulbs including dim-able. Some dim-able LED bulb cartons say won't work with all LED dimmers. LED dimmer carton state won't work with all dim-able LED bulbs.
