Hi everyone. I just bought my house and there is a single pole switch I can not figure out what it controls or even doing there. Single pole switch, red and black wire, both wires indicate hot when test regardless if the switch is on or off. No ground. Is it logical for a red and black wire to connect to a single pole switch and both wires always hot? Pic included... ( I hope) Using a lamp I test every outlet switch on and off and it doesn't seem to control a thing. My goal is to tap into a source for some LED ceiling lights in the living room. **UPDATE** I test red & black wires separately and they are both hot and using my continuity tester the single pole switch works correctly. The other switch controls a floor level hall light

Noob here with some lighting issues. I purchased 3 recessed light last (halo 4”) the other day. I got them all installed and tested with a hot light to make sure I had power throughout. Other things on the same breaker are working fine. Heres where it gets tricky. It’s an old house (50’s-60’s) and has the old braided wire with no ground running from it (14 ga) and old screw in style breaker box. I also was going to install a dimmer switch but needed new wiring (Romex) to complete the job. After looking at it I realized I didn’t have anywhere for the ground. I grounded the wire in the junction box on the box itself. I have fire to the lights and to the switch, but on a multimeter it flickers between 0 and 1. Nowhere close to 120. So what’s the problem. Can I even run the romex to the old wire? Am I grounding out somewhere? Do I need to run romex straight from the box? If so, what’s the wiring schematic on an old box. Thanks in advance. I’ve done a lot of research but can’t find anything. Take it easy on me! 👍
