Cannot connect new ceiling fan

I am swapping an old ceiling fan with a new one.
The new ceiling fan has only black, white and ground wire and so does the dimmer switch that comes with it.
In the ceiling junction box where the old ceiling fan was there are only black, white and ground wires > so I installed the new fan and connected black to black, white to white and ground. When I opened the switch box instead I found that the switch of the old fan was connected to 2 black wires plus a red wire. I connected the new fan’s dimmer - which only has 2 black wires and ground - to the 2 black wires in the switch box and the ground. I capped the red wire. The new fan is not working. Can anybody tell me what to do?

You should have connected the red same as the old switch.

Three wires on the switch.....
With your old fan switch..... the red was probably connected together to one of the black wires.

New switch has 2 black wires and ground only

The old switch had connections for 3 wires: 2 black ones and one red one. The new switch instead only has 2 black wires - no place to connect the red wire. Are you guys saying I should connect one of the black wires coming out of the new switch to one of the black wires in the switch box, and then connect the other black wire from the new switch to both the other black wire and red wire in the switch box altogether?
like black to black and the other black to black AND red?!

That sounds like a three way switch. Is there a second switch that also controls the light. You will need a three way dimmer.

The old switch had connections for 3 wires:
Look at the old switch. Did it have ON and OFF on the front by the handle ?
Did it have THREE actual screws for wires or two screws and push-in terminals ??
