Troubleshooting faulty light switch

When i flip the switch for the light in my livingroom on, nothing happens. Flip it off and back on again, nothing happens. Repeat about five times and the light starts flicking on temporarely before going out. Repeat about five more times and the light suddenly turns on permanently.

Leaving the light on for an hour or so and then turning off the light again. For the next about ten minutes the light will switch on immediately when i flip the switch.

Where should i start, check the bulb, check the fixtures, check the switches? If you can link a step by step guide for truobleshooting it would be much appreciated. I dont have any experience besides the very basics of home electrical works, but i am handy and i have no problem tinkering and following a guide on the internet.

What type of light? It is fluorescent?
If a regular type light I would try a new switch.

Thanks, i believe it is flourescent. Would my first plan of attack be to try out an LED bulb?

No! If it's fluorescent, I would try a new bulb first. Then if that doesn't work, then most likely it's the ballast. If it is then switch out the fixture for an LED.

You did not say what type of a light bulb/fixture it is.

Is it a fluorescent light bulb or a florescent fixture (the ballast is built into the fixture like 4 foot fixtures).
If just a standard bulb type fixture try a different bulb does not matter what type.

I do not have any fluorescent bulbs in my house any more. LED's are the way to go.
