Smart dimmer not working

I am trying to install a new smart dimmer switch. The old switch had two black wires, each connected to a black wire in the electrical box and was working fine. The new (smart) switch has a white wire, as well as line and load terminals. I was able to pull out the white wire from the electrical box that corresponds to the line black wire and the switch turns on ok (connects to wifi, responds to remote commands). Nothing happens when I connect the other black wire from the box to the load on the switch. However, the light will not turn on at all. What could be happening?

The white should not have been pulled out of anything. You should have added the white from the switch to the bundle of white wires in the box. By separating the white wire you have opened the neutral circuit.
