Kitchen exahust fan placement.

Assuming both were equal in simplicity and cost, is it better to put the blower for kitchen exhaust fan at the beginning of the duct work (in the hood) or at the end (on the roof)? Long run, 2 45Deg bends, almost entirely vertical.

All things being equal, I'd put the blower on the roof. Less noise, and more choices of fans. Be sure to use an upblast fan to minimize grease buildup on the roof.

Pumps, blowers and fans work best when they can push. A fan or blower will be more efficient if it's at the inlet (stove) end of your vent system. Commercial vent systems often have it located on the roof because there is no room in the kitchen for the large fans so they put them where the can and the roof has lots of open space and easy access.
