Changing double switch to single dimmer switch

<img src="https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.doityourselft.com-vbulletin/2000x1504/img_20200902_155732_04651f5f4962612e5165b5399cb518f886eca770.jpg" width="1128" height="1504"/>

I'm doing some decorating and came to change my double light switch to a single dimmer switch. The left hand switch belonged to some lights under a step which were taken out before we moved in but they are still connected to the switch. I've connected the dimmer switch, taken out the loop wire which connected to both common and taped the wires up for the left hand switch. Turned the electricity and light back on and it doesn't work. Any suggestions where I may have gone wrong?

You should connect the two wires that were joined by the loop and connect to one of the dimmer connections.

Hi, remove the 1 single wire that you know for sure goes to the steps, wire nut it, remove the the 2 wires that are jumped together and put a pigtail on them and connect it to one side of the dimmer , the remaining wire will go to the other switch of the dimmer.
