How to control string lights on our deck?

We are running a set of string lights overhead, which will plug into an outlet, but would like some way (smart switch/outlet or regular) to turn the lights on/off.

One set of plugs is a GFI, off the deck, so we would have to walk off the deck to plug it in. The outlet is a regular outlet with the metal spring covers, which will need an extension cord along the edge of the house to the railing so it could power the string lights.

We really would like something that would be easy to do to turn these lights on and off whenever it get dark. Any thoughts/suggetions? I'm mildly handy, but the option to run new wires or cut holes in the walls may not be so welcomed or within my scope.

Do a search on extension cord with switch . Just make sure it is outdoor rated.

Have you looked at wi-fi smart plugs?

Hi, post a pic of the box you have that the lights are plugged into, you may be able to use a photo cell.

There are outdoor-rated smart outlets that are available.
I don't have a suggested vendor, but as long as it's outdoor rated, you should be good to go.
