I stupidly forgot to look at the light fixture wiring before I removed the old one. I have 5 wires coming out of the ceiling. There are 2 white wires, 2 black wires, and 1 orange wire.
In the dimmer switch location the orange wire is connected to one of the black wires on the switch and the black wire from the wall is connected to the other black wire on the switch. The two white wires are connected together and not connected to the dimmer switch. I am trying to attach a new light fixture that has only three wires: a load, neutral, and ground.
There is another dimmer switch for that room but I don't remember if it goes to the light fixture that I am replacing or not. The dimmer switches are the kind that you push in to turn on/off and turn to dim. I am also trying to replace the dimmer switch with a new leviton one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Wires coming out of the ceiling Wiring at the dimmer switch location
What are the black wires for? When I change the dimmer switch, should I just wire it like the old one? One wire to the orange wire and one to the black wires in the wall?
Is there a way I can tell if the other dimmer switch in the room also operates the same light other than just testing it after I hookup the new fixture?
It would be pretty rare to have two dimmers in the same room operating the same light(s).
I don't know of any way of finding out which lights it controls without testing it by turning it on.
I've got a fan on my porch that won't start. I have replaced the chain switch but that didn't work. I can feel it trying to start but I can't manually spin the blades. What's the best way to unstick the motor or blades?
1 of 3 pot lights work. It’s on a 3 way switch, but I don’t think that should matter.
I removed the old light fixture in the center of my hall and installed 3 lights down the hall.
the center is where the power is. This is the only one that works. I used push in connecters on all 3.
I used a non contact tester with the switch on and there is power going to all 3.
I simply connected the power from the breaker box (from the old fixture) to the center pot light, then connected wire to the first and last of the pot lights to the center one.
the connections seem solid and they’re the right colors/wires.
do note, when I wired everything up, I tested them before closing everything off and putting them in the ceiling and they all lit up.
i also switched around the actual pot lights to the center one and they all work off the center one, so it’s not the actual light.
any ideas what I did wrong?
