We’re replacing recessed lighting from the 90s in our kitchen. We brought home some 4 inch retrofit LED lights from Lowe’s (these) thinking it would be an easy fix. And it would have been, I think, except we discovered the old housing is actually 4.5 inches. I’m stumped, and also new to recessed lighting.
The best method we can come up with is remove everything that’s there, cut a wider hole in the ceiling and install new 5 or 6 inch can lights. Is there a way to update the lighting without cutting through drywall?
And while we’re here, we have one 7 inch openings above the sink in the same soffit. We initially wanted to put in a pendant light but figured an easier (and cheaper) plan would be using a trim piece (like this one) to make a 6 inch can light fit. Will the trim piece work, and what type of can light do we need to buy to fit in this type of housing?
Is this a generic electrical part that I can buy? Nutone doesn't offer just the light socket. It's broken inside. The aluminum piece that the bulb screws in is separated from the plastic part. I'd like to repair it so I can use 2 bulbs again.

Hi all,
I need to rewire a switched outlet (located at the normal height on the wall behind hutch in my photo). The three-way switches are located on the walls at the very left and right edge of the photo. I'll be installing a new box and chandelier in the middle of this room that will be switched. Looking for advice in particular on how best to run the cable and minimize the number of drywall holes I need to patch. There's no access from above. The ceiling joists run perpendicular to the stairs, so from the wall opening away, if that makes sense. I've got a cold air return vent there as well. Not sure how that might figure into things.
Also, I want to make the existing outlet always hot. If somebody can point me to how to change the wiring, that would also be helpful. I have some electrical experience and several books, so not too worried about that. More worried about how to attack running the cable and minimizing drywall cuts.
Appreciate any advice. Thanks!
