Moving fan remote receivers

I have two ceiling fans in my living room. The room itself has 14-foot ceilings and the fans are on 3-foot down rods. Right now, the receivers are at the very top of the fans, basically in the ceiling and this makes them very, very difficult to reach. At present, the way that the receivers are set, they have to be wedged under the caps at the top of the down rods and are extremely hard to get in place and install. I was wondering, is there any reason I couldn't just run standard insulated electrical wire down the rod and connect the receiver closer to the fans? That would make working in there a lot easier and both fans have upper and lower lights, and the receivers are about the size of a pack of cigarettes. It seems like this would be better moving forward.

You could if the remainder of the fan electronics are at the bottom of the 3 foot rods and not at the top with the receiver.

The receiver is the only thing there. The fan and the electronics are at the bottom for sure. I ran this by an electrician friend of mine and he said it wouldn't work because the rod runs straight into the fan, and there's no place to put the receiver.

You can take your friends word or investigate the fan housing on your own. The down rod only needs to go as deep as the threads in the fan housing.

Right, but is it hollow to the point I could run wire and expose it so I could get to the receiver?

Typically there would be no way to bring the wiring out of the motor housing.
If you could..... what would you do.... just hang the receiver there with bare wiring ?
Exposed wiring would not be code compliant.
