Found this in a new house we moved into. Looks like an outlet box. There are no lights or devices that need power in that area, however, there is a pool light near it. How do I open it? Would like to find out what its for.
That looks like an electrical junction box. It looks like it's hinged at the top and can slide up or down. There should be clip or latch at the bottom.
Definitely an electrical box. The front, opening side is on the left in your photos. I'm guessing and old style outlet box with gasketed cover, not the current in-use style cover.
If you have a light in the pool.... it is a splicebox.
Underwater pool lights come with a preattached cable that gets spliced to the supporting wiring.
The box would need to be avove the maximum water level.
Hi! Just discovered this site and love it!
Two quick questions:
- Just bought new light fixture for my new house, it says to only use with 90C rated cable. I'm in Canada, my cable is NMD-3, which is the same as NM cable, rated for 60C. Can I just add a junction box and run like 2 or 3 feet of NMD90 cable to the function, which is rated for 90C. Do I have to replace the whole cable?
- This seems to be the only NMD-3 cable in the house, all others seems to be modern cabling, with plastic (or vinyl?) insulator? The cable is white, super standard. Are all those cables rated for 90C? I can see a bit of the cable coming out of the electrical boxes where the switches are. I want to change all fixtures, so it would be great if all other cables were fine.

I have a couple recessed cans (marked Type IC) that I'm replacing bulbs in, but I've run across two questions.
1) The recessed fixture says max 40W A19 bulb. That 40W clearly refers to incandescent, so a 60W-equivalent, 8.5W actual draw LED is good to go, right?
2) I have LED bulbs that state "suitable for enclosed fixtures" on the front of the box. But in the fine print on the back of the box, it says "use in enclosed fixtures may shorten bulb life." I've always heard that "suitable for enclosed fixtures" meant it could be used in enclosed fixtures without any problems, but shortened life sounds like a problem. Am I misunderstanding? Do I need to look for a different bulb?
