I'm installing 2 sconces on a bathroom wall. I bought 2 metal boxes with plaster ears. They didn't have boxes with the wings that expand when you turn the screws. Will these boxes suffice? If so, should I put a piece of wood behind the drywall where the screws will go in?
I have seen the wing ones exist online but the 2 local big box stores didn't have them.
The sconces are nothing crazy...maybe 2 pounds each.
In the picture is most likely the box you've got.
You can add those wings (red arrows) to any box or you should be able to use box supports.
You could fasten a piece of 1x2 above and below the box and fasten to that too.
You'd have to fasten the wood behind the sheetrock with a screw just beyond each end of the box.
You can use Madison/F straps to hold the box to the drywall shown in Fig 1 in the right picture. Otherwise, a lot of the time you can use a standard device box, as shown in Fig 2
Recently I was cutting a 6" hole for a recessed LED disk. It was through 2 layers of 5/8" drywall, and I used a multi tool--my preferred tool as I don't have the hole saw.
Seems you have to push the blade straight edge (or angle it slightly) while plunging into the ceiling in a circular motion. For me hard to do accurately. I had a few minor glitches outside the circular hole.
Is there a better way with the multi tool on a circular hole? Or was It just more challenging with having 2 drywall layers? My thought was having a blade that had a cutting edge on 2 sides rather than one. But I don't see such a blade online.
I have a room that is approximately 13x13 with a light in the center. I would like add 4 recessed lights to this room and was wondering about the power supply. Do I tie into the fixture in the center of the room or do I run wires from the switch? Any help would be appreciated.
