Installing Utilitect canless lighting

Can a Utilitech canless light fixture # 1500760 be installed over an existing jbox attached to a ceiling joist or must the existing box be removed?

For that fixture, you need to cut a 5 or 6 inch diameter hole in the sheetrock and the fixture recesses into that hole. If you leave the old box in place, it will prevent the new fixture from fitting into the hole because the edges of the box are usually flush with the outside face of the sheetrock. Once you cut the bigger hole for the new fixture, it should give you enough room to easily remove the old box. The wires that run into the old box will be pulled out of the box and run into the new junction box that comes with the fixture (using proper romex clamp fittings).
