25 hp johnson water pump replacement

The mod. # is 25R70E. The water pump has not been changed in the 12 yrs. I have owned the motor. I go yrs. without running the motor at all. I cranked it yesterday. There seems to be enough water coming out the exhaust when above idle. My ? is should I be getting water out at idle? Do I need to replace it for preventive maintenance. Also is the exhaust the only place to see water? What are the procedures for changing the pump?

Thanks

water should be coming out of the port in the exhaust housing
mixed with exhaust it should be a pretty good flow, fill your
cupped palm in two to three seconds while running in a tank
or in the lake. Ususally the thermostat housing is the first
place to clean, after you ck the impeller. change the gear lube
regularly too. No adjustment on the carb, just an idle screw.

Thanks Boatmech,
I changed the impeller yesterday. I now have plenty of water.
I did not check the thermostat. I will do that next.
In the Mod. # 25R70E, what does the "E" indicate?

Thanks

the E should indicate that it was set up for electric starting.
congrats on the water flow.

Thanks,
It does not have elect. start. It does have the ring gear on the flywheel. I wish it did!

Thanks again

e in model number

During that time period it means the engine was manufactured by Evinrude. Johnson built the big engines and Evinrude built the little ones.

I been to the factory. Dealer tour. They are all (Johnson & Evinrude ) made at the same time. They split off the assembly line just before paint so the Evinrude gets blue paint and Evinrude stickers. Same engines until paint. The E is for electic start set-up. Dealer may not have purchased with starter but if you wanted to upgrade it would be a simple bolt on and wiring.

E for Evinrude

I have been to the factory too. Read my post again; "during that time period..." The ones made by Johnson had a J in the model number.
I don't know what they do now but I was there during that time.
