GPS and PC software

I just purchased a Garmin 76 GPS from an online auction. I haven't received the unit yet.

I would like to know what software programs I should look for to possibly do the following.
Download my daily fishing travels and waypoints. I'm thinking I could have a map on my pc with the waypoints on it and use it to spot hot spots where I am catching fish. I could mark special points like gas wells and weather marker.

I do a lot of fishing in the open waters of Lake Erie.

Hello: joed

Interesting question. Thanks for bring up the subject.

On the vessels of which I am a guest for deep sea fishing, such programs must exist since the printed maps and waypoints are on printed papers. I just never thought to ask...

A visit to any local boat and or marine shop should provide the answers and have such software. Weather maps, warning printouts from the coast guard and other sources happen as needed from the online printers but I never thought to ask either.

Be interested to know myself as well as most other boaters reading this forum topic. Both of us than need to do the research and post back the results....

Any current forum readers have info? Post it here. Sharing we all learn more.

The program looks good and its free. Now if I can find a free map of eastern Lake Erie basin I should be all set to play when I get my new toy.

Joe

Link will not appear as a link until I get the codes turned on.

Which should happen this week.

Thanks for the link.

I'll clean up your post so when the codes get turned on the link will appear.

Try this web site for the map wanted. May have one.

Found this site. It has links to everything you need to know about GPS including what is GPS and how does it work.

Any GPS mapping software should work, providing it can interface with your GPS unit.

Delorme Street Atlas is nice, as is Microsofts Streets and Trips.
A visit to your local marine store will provide the CD's that contain the marine maps (if you want them, they'll show buoy, waterways, etc, but you don't have to have them..).

Otherwise, just mark your favorite spots, the gps already knows where the shore line is. Just make sure the first waypoint you make is the boat dock..

Actually, waypoint every boat dock/fuel source you come across, never know when you might need it.

I have that program and it works very well with Garmen although it is not actually free. you can download the Shareware version for free but that has many of the features locked out. I purchased the full version and if I remember right, it was $15-$20.
