Wave Runner question
I just landed a 94 Wave Runner. Seems to run good and is pretty clean. I took it out recently to run it and see if it needed anything before a longer trip. I have never owned a PWC but have used our friend's on several occasions. They ones I have ridden in the past have gear shifters....Forward, Neutral, and Reverse. I can buy the fact they may not all have Reverse....but I find no gear mechanism at all and this PWC apparently has no neutral. Am I blind or is this a fact? Anyone?

Hello: M W
Stop by a local dealer for that brand. Bring them the make, model and serial numbers. Have the counter parts/service person look up the machine on their computer and you will findout out what the machine was equiped with originally.
Since the vessel was purchased used, the reverse system, a cupped device in front of the thruster, may have been removed for some reason. Same may apply to the control(s) that operated the reverse device.
Doubt there would be any specific info online for that year model do to it's age. So a visit to a dealer and or repair shop will be a must. And required since I suspect no owners manual came with the machine either.
Point is, it's a used machine and unknown what it originally came equipped with and what may have happened to the machine prior to you purchasing it as is, etc.
I too have not seen or known of any waver runner (not a jetski) not having a method of some type for a reverse propulsion system. Jetski maybe but not a waver runner. I could be incorrect on this matter. Same for a neutral.
The resident boat service & repair professionals may have additional helpful information, suggestions and advice. Check back on your question several times for additional replies.

No personal watercraft has a gear shifter per-se.
The lever simply redirects the water thrust, much like the steering nozzle does.
As mentioned, most older two-seaters do not have this mechanism.
With a little creativity, a system can be adapted to your WaveRunner. I have done this on a few boats. It is neither cheap or easy, though.
Make sure your engine idle speed is properly adjusted. Over time, you will learn how to navigate in tight areas without reverse.
