Not sure if outboard cooling system is working
I have a Chrysler 115hp outboard I'm trying to repair. I bought the flushing tool to hook a hose up to the intake, but when I turn the water on (engine still off), water comes out the other side. Is this normal? I expected both holes on both sides of the lower unit were intake, and the water exhaust would be somewhere else on the engine. How do I know which side is intake and which is exhaust? The flushing tool has a hose connection on one rubber cup, and the other rubber cup has a hole.
Thanks to anyone who can help out here. I don't want to turn the engine on until I feel confident that water is actually flowing through the cooling system.

Hello hekman. Welcome to the Boats, Sailing, Pwc's & Navaigations topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Cooling water will come out of the engines exhaust at the propeller when the engine is running. That is when the water pump is running. When the engine is running.
Be sure water does flow out once the engine starts. If not, turn off engine asap and have the pump/impeller and t-stat replaced. If water does flow out, do not revup the engine, just allow it to idle. Do not engage the gear box either.
Check for warm water flow out of the exhaust at the prop dischrage. Water volume should increase once the t-stat opens. Flushing should not take long. Couple of minutes, than turn engine off.

always better safe than sorry. go with sharps advise, but i would put in a new water pump impeller before i used the boat, especially if its been setting long. ive seen too many boats in our marina with bad engine because they didnt change the impeller every 2-3 years.
