Starter....or non starter

Hi, I have a Yamaha 40 br 2 stroke o/b which I am trying to convert to electric start.Having bought a second hand starter , It would seem faulty.
The starter will spin , gear will rise and engage flywheel, but motor will crank over at a snails pace like symptons of a flat battery. It is set up with no solonoid.jump leads straight to diesel car battery ,even running. If I pull out one of the plugs the engine then turns over rapidly even firing on one cylinder
Its as if the starter will not work under load.Things I have done ---
greased flywheel, cleaned bushes ,cleaned inside casing cleaned windings and armature.bushes look good springs ok.No shorts between armature and spindle or between bush and case + and - .Any suggestions would be grateful
as these starters cost a fortune to buy new.

You need to check the CCA of the battery and what CCA the starter needs. Most OB engines use HIGH CCA batteries.
