mercruiser 4.3L starter motor
I need help with the starter. I'm having trouble finding one that fits.
The old starter had 9 teeth. Called Bass Pro for a new one and gave them
the serial number for engine and the Sierra starter that came in has
11 teeth. they say that it is supposed to fit but it does not.
My boat is Suntracker party deck 21 with a 4.3L mercruiser.

Boat Mech,
First of all thank you for your quick reply to my question. Since then
we have gotten the Sierra #18-5913 installed but it will turn over but
it sounded like a missing tooth on the flywheel. We examined the
flywheel and there are no missing teeth. Now to complicate matters
the previous owner had already replaced the starter once with the 9 tooh
Delco. We shimmed the Sierra starter and it worked better but still
sounded like a bad spot. Could this sound been fuel on top of piston?
also we have had the same problem "Salty" had with the boat cranking
and run 1/2 mile or so and quit like you had cut it off then diesel. We are
going to try to remedy this problem by following your advice you gave
Salty about 4.3L Mercruiser. Or do you any other ideas about it quitting
after a short while?
Also do you think about us trying a different spark plug to stop
the dieseling?
Thank you, FlyingPat

cure for the starter problem
the original starter was factory equipped. the planetary gears stripped
on the drive. The replacement Sierra starter was bolted onto the
engine with the new bolts that were supplied. When we tried to start the
engine the starter drive slipped on the flywheel gear due to the length
of the new bolts supplied by Sierra (with the new starter). It was
necessary to put washers under the bolt heads to make it fit in the
proper position. If I had used the original bolts the problem would have
been fixed with no problem. Hope this will save you some grief and
money.
